Paper Tigers: Film Showing and Discussion Wednesday, May 3, 5:30 pm

The Woman’s Co-op, BC Pulse, Great Start Collaborative & BC Vision have partnered on a learning opportunity for the community, especially those who work closely with children. Teachers, parents, and other caring adults are encouraged to attend.

On Wednesday, May 3, 2017, the documentary film Paper Tigers will be presented at Trinity Lutheran Church, 2055 E. Columbia, Battle Creek, 5:30 p.m. The viewing is free and open to everyone. Discussion, facilitated by Dr. Cae Soma of Starr/ TLC will follow.

Paper Tigers is about Adverse Childhood Experiences. James Redford documented the lives of students in Lincoln Alternative High School in Walla Walla, Washington. These students had behavioral issues and poor academic records. They were often suspended. After discovering the studies on ACE’s, the school changed its approach to handling the students with kindness instead of automatic punishment.

The film demonstrates how teachers use new science and fresh methods in their classrooms.  It also suggests ways in which family members, parents, and others can help children overcome the negative effects of ACE’s.

Paper Tigers is a must-see for parents and all who work with children. Adults/Parents please note that this film addresses emotionally charged topics and uses strong language. It is encouraged that youth under the age of 15 be accompanied by a parent/caregiver.

The Jesus Fatwah – Love your (Muslim) neighbor as yourself.

Much of what passes as information about Islam is weed-like disinformation rooted in stereotype and watered by fear. In The Jesus Fatwah, Islamic and Christian scholars offer reliable information about what Muslims believe, how they live out their faith, and how we all can be about building relationships across the lines of faith.

Featuring seventeen Islamic and Christian scholars, including:

  • Hans Küng ( Islam: Past, Present and Future)
  • Brian McLaren ( Why Did Jesus, Moses, the Buddha, and Mohammed Cross the Road?)
  • Eboo Patel ( Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim)
  • Stephen Prothero ( God is Not One: The Eight Rival Religions That Run the World–and Why Their Differences Matter)
  • Feisal Abdul Rauf ( What’s Right with Islam Is What’s Right with America)

Sessions beginning January 19th at Trinity Lutheran 10 to 11:30am and January 20th 6:30 to 8pm at First Congregational.
